When Air Show Atlantic takes to the skies over Saint John Airport this August, thousands of spectators will see precision flying, historic aircraft and breathtaking aerobatics.
What they won’t see is the tireless, year-round work that goes into making it all happen.
For Sean Ryan, Air Show Atlantic’s Director of Air Operations, planning for the show never really stops.
“I’m already thinking about what we’re going to do in 2027,” Ryan said with a laugh.
Ryan has been involved with Air Show Atlantic for 22 years, first joining the organization in a security role before working his way into air operations. A lifelong aviation enthusiast, he traces his passion back to the childhood trips to the former Shearwater International Air Show with his father, who encouraged him to learn to fly.
“As a kid, the air show was like Christmas for me,” he said.
Today, Ryan helps shape nearly every aspect of the flying program. He works directly with military units and civilian performers, books acts such as the Canadian Forces Snowbirds, coordinates aircraft appearances, manages performer contracts and helps ensure all regulatory and safety requirements are met.
In many ways, Ryan serves as the bridge between the performers and the air show itself.
“I came for the airplanes, but I stayed for the people,” he said. “The people that I’ve been able to meet and work with over the decades are amazing.”
That work has already been underway for more than a year for this summer’s event at YSJ, including coordinating the appearance of a rare de Havilland Mosquito – the only aircraft of its kind currently flying in North America.
Air Show Atlantic will take place at Saint John Airport Aug. 29 and 30, bringing world-class aviation entertainment to the region.
