If you’ve travelled on Air Canada through Saint John Airport, chances are you’ve met Mary Peddle.
For the past seven years, Mary has been helping travellers navigate everything from smooth departures to unexpected disruptions.
Mary’s favourite part of the job is simple: the people. She has a deep understanding of human nature and a talent for connecting, even in stressful situations. Mary approaches every interaction with a big smile and lots of empathy, and maybe some calming essential oils.
Mary isn’t just known for her kindness; she’s a fixer at heart, often helping travellers solve complex issues. In fact, some of her former travel agency clients still reach out to her for advice and guidance.
And as we approach National Airport Workers Day on Thursday (June 25), it’s the perfect time to recognize dedicated employees like Mary who keep our airport running smoothly every day.
In her job with Air Canada at Saint John Airport, Mary brings decades of experience in the travel industry: 12 years working with the city in tourism information centres, followed by nearly 30 years at travel agencies across Saint John, where she helped people explore the world.
Mary had been retired for nine years but felt the pull to return to work, and it’s easy to see why she was such a natural fit at the airport.
Her dedication extends beyond her scheduled shifts. Mary has been known to come in on her days off to lend a hand or even take part in airport initiatives like our Earth Day clean-up.
Her sense of humour and friendly presence leave a lasting impression, and it’s not uncommon for her name to come up in customer feedback surveys.
One traveller shared: “The staff at check-in is unbelievably great, especially Mary!! Can’t believe how much she helped us when our flight was delayed and we missed our connecting flight!! She’s the best!! Her customer service is excellent!!”
Her colleague Ruth concurs: “Most of us call her mom or Mother Mary. She’s so thoughtful and thinks of everyone.”
Mary’s dedication, experience, and genuine care for people make her an invaluable part of the YSJ community.
She makes the journey feel a little easier, a little calmer, and a lot more human. And that’s what great customer service is all about.
Mary’s advice for travellers
- Arrive early – especially if you’re checking bags
- Make sure your identification is current
- When in doubt, come to the counter. Agents can help.
