Earning more flights for Saint John

By Court Edeburn

When you arrive somewhere new, it’s natural to spend time understanding the place – how it works, what people value, where the opportunities are. But at some point, that reflection has to turn into action.

For me, that shift happened quickly in Saint John. Not long after I started here in December, it became clear that the opportunity here isn’t abstract – it’s very real, and it’s right in front of us. The question is how we build on it.

One thing I’ve learned throughout my career is that growing air service isn’t as simple as adding flights.

Airlines make decisions based on demand, reliability and long-term sustainability. Aircraft and crews are limited resources. Every new route or frequency has to work – not just in theory, but in practice. And in our region, the challenge isn’t really about competition between airports. It’s about behaviour.

People will travel to get the flight they want – even if that means leaving the region to find it. That tells us something important: the demand exists. The opportunity exists. Our job is to bring more of that demand home. That starts with a clear focus: increasing frequency and capacity.

More flights, more seats and better timing. Those are the building blocks that make an airport more useful, more competitive and more relevant to the community it serves.

But airlines don’t respond to ambition alone. They respond to strong business cases.

That means demonstrating that Saint John is a market worth investing in – a place where flights will be supported, where seats will be filled, and where partnerships will be productive over the long term.

It also means working closely with our airline partners to understand their challenges and help solve them. At the end of the day, their goal is the same as ours: to connect people in ways that make sense, economically and operationally.

When we align around that, progress follows.

At the same time, growth isn’t just about numbers. It’s about the experience people have when they choose to fly from here.

Air travel can be stressful. Delays, connections, timing – it all adds up. But what we can control is how people feel when they move through our airport. That’s where Saint John has a real advantage.

There’s a warmth here. A sense of hospitality. A team that genuinely cares about the people passing through.

Our goal is to build on that – to make YSJ a place where the experience is seamless, where people feel taken care of, and where the airport becomes a positive part of the journey, not just a step along the way.

There’s also an important truth in all of this.

Air service doesn’t grow in isolation – it grows when a community gets behind it. Every time someone chooses to start their trip at Saint John Airport instead of driving elsewhere, it sends a signal. It strengthens the case. It builds momentum. And over time, those individual choices add up to something much bigger.

More demand leads to more service. More service leads to more convenience. And that, in turn, encourages even more people to fly from home.

That’s how sustainable growth happens.

Airports are often seen as infrastructure – runways, terminals, schedules. But they’re much more than that. They’re connectors. They link people to opportunity. Businesses to markets. Communities to the rest of the world.

Here in Saint John, that role is especially important. The airport is a gateway – not just for travellers, but for economic growth across the region.

In 2023 alone, airport activity contributed nearly $150 million to the regional economy and supported more than 1,100 jobs. Those numbers reflect something deeper: the impact of being connected.

And as we grow, that impact grows with us.
