For many travellers passing through Saint John Airport, a stop at Connections Bistro is part of the journey. For Yan Del Valle and his wife, Yeny, it’s something more – it’s a way to be part of the community that makes YSJ what it is.
Their connection to YSJ goes back almost 15 years, beginning with janitorial services before evolving into food and retail operations.
Today, the couple operate Connections Bistro along with the YSJ Market and Duty Free shop in the departure lounge, offering everything from fresh meals and coffee to grab-and-go items and locally inspired products.
But beyond the day-to-day, what stands out is how they see their role.
“This isn’t just a business location,” Yan says. “It’s a community space.”
That perspective comes from experience. Over the years, the Del Valles have watched YSJ evolve – through growth, changing travel patterns and, most notably, the pandemic. When travel slowed to a near standstill during the pandemic, the airport remained open, supporting essential travel and maintaining a sense of continuity for the region.
“We were still here,” he says. “The airport was still here when people needed it.”
That moment reinforced something Yan already believed: YSJ is more than infrastructure. It’s a gathering place, a connector, and for many, a first and last impression of the region.
Today, as passenger traffic has surged back up and energy builds inside the terminal, Yan sees that same spirit in the people around him – airport staff, partners and travellers alike.
“There’s a shared pride here,” he says. “People care about this place.”
That shows up in small moments – a warm welcome at the counter, a familiar face behind the till, a sense that, even in a busy travel day, you’re somewhere familiar.
For Yan, that’s what makes YSJ different.
“It feels local,” he says. “And that matters.”
