A steady presence at the checkpoint

For many travellers, the first real moment of an airport journey happens at security.

At Saint John Airport, that moment is shaped by Jeremy Parlee – a familiar face and a steady presence who has spent more than two decades helping passengers move calmly and confidently on their way.

Jeremy joined Saint John Airport in 2001, starting as a custodian before discovering an unexpected interest in aviation security. By 2003, he had moved into pre-board screening, followed quickly by a supervisory role. In 2019, he became a Service Delivery Manager, overseeing security screening operations and leading the team responsible for pre-board screening at YSJ.

It wasn’t a career Jeremy ever imagined for himself – and certainly not one that would lead to management. But over time, the work, and the people, stuck.

“At the end of the day, it’s about making sure passengers know they’re getting on a plane that will take them safely to their destination,” he says.

Security screening can be stressful, especially for infrequent or first-time travellers. Jeremy sees experience and reassurance as essential parts of the job – not just for himself, but for his entire team. Helping passengers understand what comes next, answering questions, and easing anxiety are all part of delivering a positive experience.

That approach, he says, reflects both training and temperament.

“We’re Maritimers,” he says with a smile. “People here genuinely want to help.”

Originally from Saint John, with deep family roots in Newfoundland, Jeremy chose to work at the airport simply because it was close to home. Once inside, he was drawn to the pace and unpredictability of the industry.

“No two days are ever the same,” he says. “You never really know what the day will bring.”

After more than 20 years, that sense of shared purpose – helping people travel safely and confidently – is what keeps him coming back.

For travellers passing through YSJ, Jeremy and the team he leads are a steady, welcoming presence at the very start of the journey.
